Ok, it’s not really we. It’s just me. But I sure do punch above my weight.
I’m David and I work at the intersection of research, communication, and design.
I get research because I’m a researcher just like you.
I have a Ph.D in anthropology from the University of California, San Diego. If you’re interested in Mexican migration to the United States, youth soccer, and you have a spare couple days, might I suggest my dissertation as some light reading material?
For the past couple years, I’ve been working in program evaluation. When I’m not making websites, I work in the research department of the Oregon Community Foundation.
I know how to communicate information in a wide variety of formats to a wide variety of audiences.
I co-founded a magazine that raised $15,000 on Kickstarter and produced three beautiful issues.
I started Panenka after realizing how many researchers struggle to share their work with broader audiences. I’m passionate about developing websites — incorporating audio, video, photos, and text — in order to help researchers communicate more effectively.
The first website I ever made was in 1997. Boy am I glad you can’t find that website today.
All of the websites design today are made in WordPress. I love WordPress because it is both powerful and easy to use. Twenty-five percent of all websites use Wordpress, from sites as large as the The New York Times blogs to small sites like this one. And it’s simple enough that even the most technologically-challenged can figure it out (trust me, I’ve tested this notion out).
My design aesthetic, as you may gather from this site, tends toward the simple and clear. Beautiful affectations are beautiful, but often fail to communicate effectively. My goal is to help you succeed in sharing your story with the world, and simple is usually best. The portfolio has examples to show you what I mean.
Here’s What I Can Offer
- I know where you as a researcher are coming from.
- I can help you think of creative ways to communicate what you do.
- Together, we can design a website that beautifully and effectively shares your work with the world.
Shall We Talk?
